The birth of the Soroptimist Organization occurred in the 1920s in Oakland, California, as a response to the existing gender discrimination in service organizations. The growth of the group was immediate and strong and spread rapidly throughout the world thus the creation of Soroptimist International, now a global enterprise. That enterprise is found in 120 countries throughout the world, including the Sierra Nevada Region.
Soroptimist provides aid to women and girls with the goal of economic independence. This is achieved through a variety of programs to include:
- “Dream It, Be It”, targeted towards high school girls,
- “Live Your Dream”, for adult women who desire education, and
- Other activities tailored towards regional needs by working with local charities who focus on women and girls in their day-to-day lives.
Each of these programs and activities will help women and girls achieve their personal empowerment.
Introducing Soroptimist International of Sparks, Nevada
I
It was apparent there was an unfulfilled need in Sparks, Nevada on the regional Soroptimist landscape. As a recipient of a Soroptimist scholarship, our past president decided to fill that void by starting a new local club. She advertised on social media and received a strong response from women with a desire to share with others of their gender in need. The meetings occurred regularly as the membership began to grow. On April 1, 2023, the Sparks group of women were officially chartered as a new club in Soroptimist International Sierra Nevada Region. We are now entering our second year and look forward to growing and helping our community.
